• XRSounder is an automated, non-destructive impact-echo scanner designed to survey concrete slab delamination. It transforms manual, qualitative assessments into consistent, data-driven geomapping. XRSounder utilizes ‘Concrete Sounding’ to determine the positions of delamination within the survey area. The device drags brass-ball chains to excite the concrete and produces signals of various frequencies, these signals are then captured and processed in real time, to produce an objective survey map highlighting areas of concrete delamination.

  • XRSounder was created by the talented Research & Development team at Xradar BC Incorporated, based out of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

  • It shifts the industry from subjective opinions (“we think there’s a problem here”) to exact, objective datasets. This defensible record protects contractors’ margins by shutting down callbacks before they start, while giving engineers precise insights for reliable maintenance and repair decisions.

  • Not at all. Designed for field convenience, XRSounder is an ergonomic, foldable, and lightweight system that requires only a single operator, making it far less labor-intensive than traditional chain dragging.

  • No. The system’s consistently reliable, data-driven results eliminate the need for complementary testing methods, which drastically reduces overall inspection time and field costs.

  • The prototype of XRSounder (as seen at World of Concrete 2025) weighs 50lbs, and has the following dimensions:

    Folded W85 D95 H50cm
    Unfolded W85 D95 H100cm

The measurements of our final go to market product are unconfirmed though. This is information that will be presented within quarterly updates. We are motivated by ensuring the product is compact and agile, whilst being large enough to cover a significant survey area.

  • Traditional chain drag relies on a hammer, a chain, and the subjective ear of the site operator, leading to findings that are difficult to repeat or map precisely. XRSounder replaces this manual process with precision sensing and real-time digital visualization, delivering an objective, repeatable dataset regardless of who operates the device.

  • The system offers high-resolution, pinpoint detection capable of resolving concrete defects and delamination down to one square foot. This accuracy enables early intervention and helps prevent costly, widespread repairs.

  • Yes. XRSounder effectively locates and maps areas where protective coatings or membranes have lost adhesion, helping to prevent costly water ingress and surface failure that traditional sounding might miss.

  • It is built for large concrete structures, including parking garages (parkades), bridge decks, warehouse and industrial floors, and municipal infrastructure.

  • XRSounder geomaps delamination live to a CAD-exportable file. The device includes XRMapper post-processing software, allowing engineers and inspectors to digitally map large areas, overlay data, and historically track condition assessments over time.
