Overview/Intro

A contracting company hired Xradar to perform concrete scanning on an 18-inch slab in preparation for core drilling at a new restaurant site. The project required precise identification of embedded features to ensure safe and efficient coring. The slab consisted of a topping slab with heating lines, a layer of insulation, and a 14-inch structural slab reinforced with two layers of rebar. Given the complexity of the structure, accurate scanning and mark transfer were critical for minimizing risks and optimizing core placement.

The Challenge

The client faced significant obstacles in determining safe coring locations due to the slab’s intricate composition. Key challenges included: Heating lines within the topping slab are present, which, if damaged, could cause system failure. Insulation layers interfered with radar signals, necessitating both top and bottom scans. Large structural beams obstruct many preferred core locations, making coring impractical in certain areas. Need for precise mark transfer from the bottom to the top of the slab to ensure accuracy in core drilling decisions. ‍

Scope of Work

Our team was tasked to conduct high-resolution concrete scanning of the entire slab, including preferred core locations; and to provide detailed mapping of heating lines, reinforcement, and structural beams.

Our Solution

Leveraging Xradar’s industry-leading scanning service and our highly trained technicians, we delivered a comprehensive imaging solution. We conducted both top and bottom slab scans to overcome the insulation barrier and obtain a complete subsurface profile. We then meticulously measured and transferred bottom-side findings to the top slab, ensuring alignment with real-world coring requirements. By pinpointing the exact location of structural beams and strapped objects, we provided the client with a clear understanding of feasible core drilling areas.

Methodology

We utilized GPR for the detection of heating lines and reinforcement, while our technicians made use of advanced measurement and alignment tools to transfer marks with high accuracy. Collaboration with the client to confirm findings and discuss alternative solutions in real time was an essential part of this project.

Results/ Conclusion

Conclusion

Our scan results provided the client with a detailed layout of all embedded heating lines, ensuring zero risk of system damage during coring, and a complete map of structural beams and strapped objects, allowing for informed decision-making with a refined set of optimal core locations that balanced project requirements with structural integrity, markings and a final report that streamlined the core drilling process, reducing potential rework and costly delays. ‍Through Xradar’s advanced scanning techniques and expert mark transfer, we successfully mitigated risks associated with coring in a complex slab. The client was able to proceed confidently with core drilling, knowing all subsurface obstacles had been accurately identified and accounted for. Our detailed findings ultimately contributed to a safer, more efficient construction process.

The Importance of Detecting Post-Tension Cables Before Drilling

When it comes to concrete construction, few hazards carry as much risk as post-tension (PT) cables. These high-strength steel tendons are designed to reinforce and stabilize slabs, and they are tensioned with tens of thousands of pounds of force. Striking one while drilling or coring is a costly mistake.
